Undoubtedly one of the most interesting things to see near Vicenza. At the time, noble families commissioned Andrea Palladio to build these residences in the countryside, further representing the power and farce of the estate. Of the more impressive are Villa Capra Valmarana known as “La Rotonda”, Villa Godi Malinverni, Villa Pisani Ferri, Villa Valmarana Bressan, Villa Da Porto Pedrotti and Villa Gazzotti Curti.
Giambattista Tiepolo also worked on the Vicentino villas, decorating the interiors with cycles of frescoes that today can still be admired in Villa Loschi Metterle, Villa Cordellina and Villa Valmarana ai Nani.
Located at the foot of the mountains, around half an hour by car from Vicenza and embraced by the ancient walls that link the Superiore and Inferiore castles, Marostica is famous for the Chess game held in Piazza Castello, which is decorated specially for the occasion.
The Chess Game is held every second weekend in September on even years and is played by living people, re-evoking the ancient conflict between two knights challenging each other for the hand of the castellan’s beautiful daughter.
This is certainly an occasion to get to know one of the more unique aspects of the culture and traditions of the place.
Another gem of the Vicenza province, famous for the wonderful Alpines’ Bridge (another marvel of Palladio’s) but also its wine and food, an ambit in which its famous grappa exalts.
The Veneto is still a territory of native wine and vine culture. Among the most famous areas are Colli Berici (Tocai, Garganego, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet), the Gambellara area (Gambellara and Recioto) and Breganze (Vespaiolo, Torcolato and Breganze). These hills are the perfect destination for enjoyable bike rides, completed by a tasty break in an agriturismo or wine cellar.
If you are looking for ideas for an action-packed holiday, there is something for everyone. As well as the various bicycle itineraries, we also would like to mention the 18-hole course of the Golf Club Colli Berici, descents in raft or canoe on the Brenta River, trekking and winter sports on the Asiago high plains.
To recuperate your energy at the end of the tour and relax completely, you could bask a while at the Terme di Recoaro spa, just a few kilometres from Vicenza and a famous destination in the tourism of thermal baths.
