Not just masterpieces, but a story of journeys, encounters and influences that have transcended borders. Italy Germany, curated by Gabriella Belli and Valerio Terraroli, opens the trilogy Inspiration Europe. It traces over two centuries of dialogue between the two countries, from which the new languages of European art emerged.
It begins with Goethe’s journey to Italy and the comparison between Canova and Thorvaldsen. It then moves on to the encounter between the Futurists Boccioni and Carrà and the German Expressionists, and to the dialogue between Casorati’s Magical Realism and Otto Dix’s Neue Sachlichkeit, right up to the abstraction of Kandinsky and the Bauhaus.
The exhibition concludes with the leading figures of the second half of the 20th century, from Fontana and Beuys to Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer, who made art a tool of remembrance and rebirth for Europe.
An exhibition not to be missed
The exhibition brings together almost 150 works, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and documents, with contributions from the Mart in Trento and Rovereto, the Gypsotheca Antonio Canova Museum in Possagno and the Goethe House in Rome.
It is held under the patronage of the German Embassy and forms part of the celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between Italy and Germany.
Adding to all this is the setting: the Basilica Palladiana, a masterpiece by Andrea Palladio and a symbol of Vicenza. It is a rare opportunity to see, in a single gallery, works that are usually scattered across numerous European museums.
The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10.00 to 18.00, with special opening hours during the festive season: it’s perfect for an art-filled weekend.
